Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch (QTH) recently welcomed 16 New City College students for a week of work experience, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how a producing theatre works. As the only theatre in Havering offering work experience placements, QTH is proud to give local young people direct access to the industry.
The programme introduced students to a wide range of theatrical careers through practical workshops exploring wardrobe, stage management, lighting and sound, as well as performance-based skills such as directing and devising. As part of QTH’s commitment to sustainable practice and the Theatre Green Book initiative, Lizzie Keeble-Watson led a theatre design workshop focused on upcycling shoe boxes and reclaimed materials from past productions.
Led by in-house staff and external professionals, the week made a strong impression on participants. One student said, “I have really enjoyed being here for work experience because it has helped me gain a deeper understanding of many job roles within the theatre industry,” while another commented, “I enjoyed how much detail went into the discussions about [the] technical processes of a show. All sessions felt relevant and insightful.” Francesca Bailey, School’s Producer.
